Sherlyn Popelka – Fugitive Golfer

Sherlyn Popelka

This is what Sherlyn Popelka did to my friend

I am a proud member of the Doof Clenas Motorcycle Collective.   With 951 members, it is a great, active, and entertaining forum, with a lot of people that I have known for a long time.  There is an especially large Texas contingent that is pretty active,  going on a lot of rides.   I can speak for fellow members when I say that we are a close-knit group, and there is a core group of active members that consider each other family.  When something affects one of our members it affects all of us, and we come together to rally around the cause.

Which brings us to the story of Sherlyn Popelka.  Sherlyn was a rising star at the University of Arizona.  She was 19 years old and her future was bright, except for one thing.  Sherlyn Popelka didn’t know how to take responsibility for her actions.  In November 2010 she was issued a ticket for speeding.  Sherlyn Popelka, the daughter of Frank Popelka who is an executive with  Finvalor Mgt. (a real estate management company in Bradenton Florida) didn’t pay the fine for her violation.  Apparently she thought she was above the law because of her rich Daddy.  On April 28, 2011 her driver’s license was suspended for failure to pay the fine.  This didn’t mean a thing to this rich, spoiled, little brat.

On May 8, 2011 Sherlyn Popelka, underage (19 years old), had been drinking heavily.  This didn’t stop her from getting in her car and driving on her suspended license.  Unfortunately my friend Rick was riding his motorcycle to work that night.  Sherlyn Popelka, drunk out of her mind and having no business behind the wheel of a car, turned left, striking Rick’s motorcycle.  You can read the actual crash reports on http://www.sherlynpopelka.net.

Help us find Sherlyn Popelka

Rick lay unconscious in the road, his left ankle shattered, his ribs broken, his scalp torn open and bleeding profusely, his nose and cheekbones shattered.  Sherlyn Popelka didn’t care, she wanted tacos.  Sherlyn didn’t bother to stop, probably never even looked back.  She continued driving down the street then sat and ate tacos, watching the paramedics scrape Rick’s broken body off the street.  Somehow, the cops caught up with her and arrested her and she was arrested on charges of DUI, aggravated assault with serious injuries and criminal damage.  When she was arrested, she said to the arresting officers “Oh, he’ll be alright”.

True to form, Sherlyn Popelka failed to appear in court on May 19 for arraignment and a warrant for her arrest was issued on May 25.   By that time her rich, irresponsible family had flown her out of the country, back to her native country of Switzerland.  Sherlyn Popelka left a trail of destruction behind and is now playing golf on the European circuit.

Today, my friend Rick is recovering from his injuries, but after something like that happens to you life will never be the same.  Sherlyn Popleka meanwhile, has hired “reputation consultants” who wish to re-write history and eliminate any trace of this incident.   This really happened, you can click the photo to the right to go to the KSAZ website, or you can read the news article on the Arizona Daily Star website, or just Google her name.

Sherlyn Popelka is sponsored by Nike, Deutsche Bank.  If this story hits you the way it does me, write her sponsors and tell them you can’t support them if they continue to support a fugitive like Sherlyn Popelka.  Make sure you follow through with your promise!

My 2012 Ram heavy duty

In August I got the bug for a new truck.  I had a 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 crew cab, and it was OK for the most part.  There were three things in particular that bugged me about it.   First and foremost was the engine.  The Dodge hemi is a great engine, no doubt, but it’s not a Cummins turbo diesel.  I had a truck with a Cummins a few years ago and have regretted getting rid of it ever since.  Second was the size of the bed.  The 1500, when coupled with a crew cab only has a 5’6″ bed.  It’s short, and in my opinion looks funny.  My new truck has a crew cab and an 8 foot bed!  The third thing was the thing they call an EVIC (electronic vehicle information center).  On the 1500 it was so dim I couldn’t read it in the daytime.  I took it back to the dealer a bunch and every time I complained about it they looked at me like I was retarded.  The new truck’s EVIC is bright and readable in direct sunlight, and it provides a lot more information than it’s predecessor.

I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted, so I ordered a truck from the factory.  I had never done that before, and it was an interesting experience.  The story can be found here.  The new truck’s Color is called Sagebrush.  In the sun it’s bright and sparkly, in the shade it’s kind of greenish-brown.  The pic below kind of shows what I’m talking about.

Harley Davidson’s Road King Classic

I’ve had my 2011 Road King Classic for almost 2 months now, and have ridden nearly 3,000 fun-filled miles.  I thought I would share my impressions of the bike so far.   I have ridden bikes with full fairings for the last 11 years, so a lot of my opinions are based on comparisons to those bikes.

Style - You have got to love the retro styling of the Road King Classic. The leather bags, the basket weave on the seat and the bags , the classic lines and the wire spoke wheels with those gaudy wide whitewalls. How can you not like it? I know from this point on, careful consideration will be given to any accessories to make sure they will contribute to the look . Mine is a combination Dark Root Beer/Light Root Beer, and I think those colors really enhance the look with the wide whitewalls. The paint has a generous amount of metal flake which comes alive in the sun, but in the shade mellows out to a nice dark brown. I am really pleased with the factory paint job. The leather covered saddlebags may require a little more maintenance, but are attractive, add to the retro look, and have the ability to be over-stuffed, something you can’t do with the hard bags found on Electra Glides.

Ride quality/comfort - Coming from over a decade of riding Electra Glide’s, with the big bat-wing fairing I expected a very different ride from a bike with just a windshield. I expected more wind, a much lighter front end, and a heck of a lot more buffeting. I wasn’t disappointed in the lighter front end. The bike handles extremely well at highway speeds as would be expected from an HD touring machine. The lightness really shows when performing slow speed maneuvers. Missing all that weight of the fairing, speakers and all the gauges of the Electra Glide the bike just glides (no pun intended) wherever you want it to go. The windshield blocks an amazing amount of wind. As a rider, I was pleasantly surprised to find there is not noticeably more wind on me than a fully faired machine. The windshield is removable, so if I want to ride without protection I have the option. The suspension seems very familiar, a duplicate of what is in the big Glides. I wish Harley would replace that stupid rear air suspension with more conventional shocks. They eliminated the air in the front, why not the rear? The seat is comfortable enough for an all-day ride, which I have done. I don’t see a need to replace it at this point. If I did, I would have to go with some sort of custom to keep the retro look going.

The handling and maneuverability of Harley's touring bikes is legendary

Engine - The Road King Classic comes with the 103 CI “Power Pak” which includes an oil cooler and security system. The 103 engine still has the stock cams and is limited by the choked off stock exhaust and intake. I did replace the mufflers and intake which woke up the engine a little bit. Because the catalytic converter is still in place there is still some restriction, and the amount of heat on rider and passenger legs is starting to get uncomfortable as the weather warms. Future plans include replacing the stock header with a ceramic coated aftermarket such as the one offered by Fullsac. That should eliminate both the heat and the restriction. In it’s current configuration, power is acceptable. Being a power junkie, I won’t be satisfied and will play with various engine components and tuning.

Overall - I am extremely pleased with this purchase. The bike is an absolute blast to ride. I think being able to see more of the road without the fairing to block my view really adds to the fun factor. It is comfortable, responsive, and more than enough power to get me around that tractor-trailer when required. The style and color generates compliments wherever I go. I have been on trips where I rode for 5 hours straight and felt no discomfort at the end of the ride, either in my butt, back, or shoulders and arms.

At this point I also need to put a plug in for the dealer that sold me my bike. Now, I am not a dealer kind of guy. There are a lot of dealers in the DFW area, and I have dealt with, or attempted to deal with all of them at one time or another, and have been put off by the arrogance or obvious stupidity of the sales, parts, or service staff. Dallas Harley Davidson in Garland, TX stands head and shoulders above all of them. The service before and after the sale is outstanding. The friendliness of the staff, and the focus on the customer is obvious and what makes them the best. Because of that I will drive past 4 other dealers to reward them with my purchases of all parts and accessories. The service department has been responsive and their work has been flawless. This is one well managed dealership. I am as pleased with Dallas HD as I am with the motorcycle I purchased from them.

My New Motorcycle

I went to the Motorcops for Kids Toy Run held in November.  It’s put on by the Garland Motorcops and the local Shriners Temple.  I know, all we ever see motorcops doing is giving out tickets, and traffic enforcement is their primary responsibility, but at least once a year  they get together and help some kids have a great Christmas.  At the annual event they give away a brand new motorcycle every year.  Every year I buy a couple of raffle tickets and consider it part of my donation to the cause.  Well, this year I WON THE MOTORCYCLE!  Unbelievable isn’t it?  Nobody ever wins those things, at least nobody I know.  Here’s a picture of my friends and I after the drawing:

"the winners"

The motorcycle was a Harley Davidson Fat Boy Low.  The FBL is a beautiful bike, however, I get more use out of a touring machine than a boulevard cruiser.  After the initial shock wore off, and before I took possession of the bike I began talking to the sponsoring dealer, Dallas Harley Davidson.  They were quite agreeable and more than fair in the negotiations, which was very refreshing considering the attitude of Harley dealers around the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex.  So we worked a deal in which I traded my current bike in and the raffle prize on a Harley Davidson CVO Ultra Classic.  The top-of-the-line, all-out motorcycle.  I figured it was a once-in-a-lifetime chance, so I went for it.  I took possession of it a couple of days before Christmas, and I am still in shock.  Of course, since then temperatures have plummeted and the ground has been coated in ice for the most part, but I’m trying to ride it.  Here’s a picture of the new baby:

The next big UFC fight: Texas vs The Feds

Oh boy!  Another day, another power grab by the Obama administration.  No, this isn’t going to be a rant against the president or his policies, but rather a proud display of what has made Texas the greatest state in the nation.

Texans are a proud people, and for the most part a good-hearted people. They believe in doing the right thing, helping your neighbor, and doing it without the government telling us to do it. Government is not something Texans look at with admiration. It’s a necessary evil. It’s something that needs to be controlled. They believe that government, in it’s current form doesn’t provide our freedom, but rather restricts it. It’s a hindrance to doing the right thing.

Peggy Venable is the Texas State Director for the Americans for Prosperity.  She recently wrote an article for the Washington Times describing one of Texas’ efforts to fight back against a federal government gone wild.  It’s kind of like a real-life version of the movie Network – we’re mad as hell and we’re not going to take it anymore!  It’s a great read.   Here’s the link to the article:  Texas fights global warming power grab

How hot is too hot?

image

It’s one of those days in DFW today.  Hot enough to make the soles of your shoes stick to the pavement as you walk to your air-conditioned car.  I rode my bike to work today, but after riding home for lunch I wisely opted to drive back in the truck.  For proof, the pic above is a screenshot from the weatherbug app on my droid powered phone.

Stay cool!

On the way to Sturgis

Yesterday my friend Ken and I left the DFW area heading for the holy grail of motorcycle rallies: Sturgis. Yes, I am finally getting to go to the great two-wheeled mecca in the north. The trip has been in the planning for about a year now and now all the anticipation has turned to excitement. I know, we’re actually going the week before the rally, but it will still be an adventure. Most of the vendors set up early and though not quite the number that will be there next week, there will still be a healthy crowd.

We left DFW yesterday morning about 9 am. The ride was for the most part uneventful. The weather was warm when we left, with low humidity. That means on thing in Texas: HEAT! I think it got very close to 100 degrees if not warmer by the time we got to Childress fro lunch. The ride from Childress to Amarillo was stifling. Going across the northeast corner of New Mexico we were getting weather alerts on our GPS’s. Of course, at that time the sky was clear blue with a relentless sun beating down on us. As we rode closer to Colorado we began to see the rain on the horizon. We pressed on, the temperature dropping, the rain falling, and we started to get chilled. Make that COLD! We rode until we intersected with I-25, where we put on our rainsuits before heading over Raton Pass. In the pass it got very wet and very cold. Thank goodness we stopped and dressed for the occasion! We spent the night in Trinidad, Co.

I’ll be posting pictures and updates throughout the trip on this page.  I also brought along a SPoT satellite tracker. You can track our progress in real time at this website: http://share.findmespot.com/shared/faces/viewspots.jsp?glId=0KMDAx7e1x294GujATgWqnAspToMenK5m

Busy year

Holy crap! I think I might have tried to fit too much into this year. This is a big year for me, having turned 50 in February. To celebrate this momentous occasion I’ve planned several very long motorcycle trips throughout the year. One is done, that being a trip to ride Colorado and Utah.

A picture of me on Black Betty

Here I am on Black Betty, my Dyna Fat Bob. What a fun bike to ride!

We rode 3300 miles in 9 days. That’s quite a feat even for the most experienced of riders. That trip is worthy of it’s own blog, and I’ll post some more details of it soon. The next trip is to Sturgis. Anybody who rides a motorcycle has either been to Sturgis, or wants to go. If they tell you otherwise, they’re lying. That’s going to be another butt burner. I’m not sure which I’m going to run out of first, time or money, but the latter seems to be nosing out the former at this point in time.

I’m going to use this blog to chronicle my adventures, both on the road and through life. I hope you find it interesting.
